Scarlet Waxy Cap
Fruiting bodies of the scarlet waxy cap (Hygrocybe coccinea) emerge in the summer and fall through the soil of mixed hardwood/coniferous forests. The cap of this species starts out as the typically conic form, then flares in the later stages to flat or humped shape. (photo: Alison C. Dibble)
